Several different underlying conditions can cause it, and someone&#8217;s specific diagnosis is usually one of these conditions, not &#8220;dementia&#8221; on its own.<\/p>\n    <p style=\"margin:0 0 6px;color:#1A1915;font-weight:600;font-size:18px;\">Alzheimer&#8217;s is the most common cause<\/p>\n    <p style=\"margin:0 0 12px;\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease is one specific condition that causes dementia, and it&#8217;s the most common one \u2014 accounting for somewhere around 60-70% of cases. Other common causes include vascular dementia (linked to blood flow to the brain, often after strokes), Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and mixed dementia, which is a combination of more than one type at once.<\/p>\n    <p style=\"margin:0 0 6px;color:#1A1915;font-weight:600;font-size:18px;\">Why the type matters<\/p>\n    <p style=\"margin:0 0 12px;\">Different types can progress differently, affect different abilities first (memory versus language versus behaviour and personality, for example), and sometimes respond differently to medication. It&#8217;s worth knowing which type you or your family member has been diagnosed with, and asking the specialist to explain what that means in practice.<\/p>\n    <p style=\"margin:0;\">Does the information on this site apply either way? Mostly, yes. Most of what&#8217;s here \u2014 coping with a diagnosis, telling people, getting affairs in order, home safety, communication strategies, respite, and so on \u2014 is general to dementia as a whole, regardless of the specific type. There&#8217;s no set order you need to follow from here \u2014 but a few things are worth thinking about in the weeks that follow, at whatever pace feels manageable.<\/p>\n        <p style=\"margin:0 0 6px;color:#1A1915;font-weight:600;font-size:18px;\">In the first few weeks<\/p>\n        <p style=\"margin:0 0 12px;\">Ask your GP or specialist for the diagnosis in writing, along with the specific type if known \u2014 this matters for accessing supports later. It&#8217;s worth asking who your ongoing point of contact will be, since dementia care often involves several different services over time and having one person to call helps.<\/p>\n        <p style=\"margin:0 0 6px;color:#1A1915;font-weight:600;font-size:18px;\">Legal and financial matters, while you can make these decisions yourself<\/p>\n        <p style=\"margin:0 0 12px;\">This is easy to put off, but it&#8217;s one of the few things that genuinely needs to happen earlier rather than later \u2014 an enduring power of attorney and an advance care directive can only be set up while you&#8217;re able to make and communicate these decisions yourself. Doing this early isn&#8217;t a sign that anything is wrong right now; it&#8217;s simply making sure your own wishes are the ones that get followed.<\/p>\n        <p style=\"margin:0 0 6px;color:#1A1915;font-weight:600;font-size:18px;\">Support and funding<\/p>\n        <p style=\"margin:0 0 12px;\">In Australia, a dementia diagnosis on its own doesn&#8217;t automatically grant access to the NDIS \u2014 eligibility depends on age and how the condition affects daily function, and younger-onset dementia is assessed differently to a diagnosis later in life. My Aged Care is generally the starting point for anyone over 65. It&#8217;s worth having this conversation with your GP or a case manager rather than trying to navigate it alone.<\/p>\n        <p style=\"margin:0 0 6px;color:#1A1915;font-weight:600;font-size:18px;\">Yourself, first<\/p>\n        <p style=\"margin:0;\">Amid the practical steps, it&#8217;s easy for how you&#8217;re actually doing to get lost. Give yourself room to feel whatever comes up \u2014 shock, relief at finally having an answer, fear, or all of it at once.
